Unlike 'normal' Astrology, Horary deals with the birth-chart of, not a person, but a question. This must seem incredible to anyone new to this subject, but as my experience in using this technique has grown, so has my amazement at the level of precision and psychological insight to be gained.

The basic principle behind Horary is to take a question - a very precise question - and draw up a chart of the heavens for the date, time and place the question is received by the Astrologer. Using rules very specific to Horary, significators are derived for the person asking the question, that which is being asked about, other parties who may be involved and, again using specific rules, these significators are judged in order to draw a conclusion regarding the likely outcome of the situation. This means that the date and time of birth is not required for this type of Astrology.

My experience of using this technique has led me to an understanding of why (although not how) this technique works: 'As above, so below'. This does not imply any cause/effect relationship any more than the birds that migrate in the Autumn cause the subsequent decline in weather. It means that events above may correlate to a state of flux, which resonate more strongly with some people than with others. The only cause/effect principle taking place, is that the corresponding state of mind of these people will cause them to ask the questions which are described to pinpoint accuracy in the Horary Chart.

For most Horary Astrologers today, the definitive textbook on this subject is William Lilly's 'Christian Astrology', written in 1647.
